Weather versus Climate

There is a clear difference between when you should use the terms weather or climate. Often people can get confused as to which constitutes which, and with global warming an ever increasing part of our lives it is important to be aware of the difference.

A good example would be the often knee-jerk comments you will hear after a particularly cold weekend or hot summers day ... 'a sure sign of climate change' or 'this global warming is getting worse'. Obviously these one off events cannot solely be attributed to climate changes but are simply the weather at that particular moment.

The climate on the other hand is to do with the weather over a period of time, for example 30 years is considered to be a good length of time to measure any statistical change in the climate.

And while the weather can affect today or tomorrow, it is the climate which determines how we will live, eat and work for our entire lifetime and that of our children.
