Top 20 Driest Towns in Spain

1.  Salorino, Caceres.  Almost unbelievably, the driest town in Spain is located in the same province as Spain's wettest town: Caceres in Extremadura.  Situated approximately 50 km west of the provincial capital of Caceres and around 30km east of the Portuguese border, Salorino has had 0mm of rain recorded in the past 5 years.

2.  Cartagena, Murcia.  A major port located on the eastern coast of Spain, this historic town has had no rainfall recorded in the past 5 years.

3.  Gargantiel, Ciudad Real.  Situated 75 km to the west of Ciudad Real and around 135km south west of Madrid, also has no rainfall recorded in the past 5 years.

4.  Moguer, Huelva.  Coastal town, just 10km south east of Huelva on the Costa de la Luz. 0 mm rainfall recorded.Driest places in Spain

5.  Trebujena, Cadiz.  Inland Costa de la Luz, located approx 20km north of Jerez de la Frontera and around 60km south of Sevilla.  Also 0mm rain recorded in past 5 years.

7.  Benaocaz, Cadiz.  Around 30km west of Ronda

8.  Utrera, Sevilla.  Located 30km south east of Sevilla, this town is famous for raising fighting bulls and there are many cattle farms in the area.   On average, over the past 5 years, this town has recorded just 2mm of rain during the month of April.

9. Guadalcanal, Sevilla.  Located about 100km northwest of Sevilla in the northern part of the province of Seville, just south of the border with the province of Badajoz and north of the Sierra Morena.

10.  Lenteji, Granada.  Located approximatelly 10km inland from Almunecar on the Costa Tropical, Lenteji recorded just 5.5mm of rain over the past 5 years during the month of May.  

11.  Gava, Barcelona.  A town in the municipality of Barcelona, just 15km south of Barcelona city, split into two centres - the urban town and Gava Mar which is located on the sea front.  Gava recorded 5.8mm of rain on average during February in the past 5 years.

12.  Villanueva del Rey, Cordoba.  A small town, located 50km north west of Cordoba city which has, over the past 5 years, recorded an average of 2mm of rain in March and 6.1 mm in May.

13.  Motril, Granada.  The main town on the Costa Tropical, Motril is located approx 60km directly south of Granada.  A busy town with a port, Motril has registered an average of 6.2mm of rain in February.

14.  Jerez de la Frontera, Cadiz.  Located 25km north east of Cadiz, Jerez is the largest and busiest city in the province of Cadiz and is famous for its Sherry, horses and Flamenco.   An average of 7.3mm of rain has been recorded during April over the past 5 years, with 0mm rain during the rest of the year.

15.  Presa de Montijo, Badajoz.  Located just outside Merida, the capital of Extremadura and historical town dating back to 25BC, Presa de Montijo has recorded average rainfall of 7.5mm in December, though nothing the rest of the year.

16.  Zapardiel de la Ribera, Avila.  Situated 1,353m above sea level, this tiny town (just 125 inhabitants were recorded in the last census, 2004)is set in the heart of the Sierra de Gredos, approx 90 km west of Madrid.   The town has received an average of 10mm of rain in January over the past 5 years and 0mm over the rest of the year.

17.  Cifuentes, Guadalajara.  Located 100km to the north east of Madrid, Cifuentees has had an average of 11.4mm of rain during April in the past 5 years.

18.  Sorihuela de Guadalimar, Jaen.  A small agricultural town located some 80km north east of Jaen capital and 40km north east of the well-known medieval town of Ubeda.  Sorihuela registered an average of 15mm of rain in the month of January.

19.  Llano de Brujas, Murcia.   A small town located 5km to the east of Murcia and around 10km south west of Orihuela.  May is the wettest month on average here with 17.5mm of rain, the summer months are dry but January and February show an average of 13.5mm of rain each.

20.  Hoyo Manzanares, Comunidad de Madrid.  This small town is located 20 km to the north of Madrid in the Parque Regional de la Cuenca Alta del Manzanares, 1,100m above sea level.  Average rainfall over the past 5 years is 20mm in January.
